Being A Movie Extra with the Mullet Family Zombies

68

By KCC Big Country

It's been a few years ago now, but the experience is still quite vivid.

You know, it's not every day that you get the opportunity to play an extra in a zombie movie and meet the Mullet Family Zombies. Especially if you grew up around central Texas.

Secretly, I had always wanted to play an extra in a movie, but I didn't really think I had the "classic look" they usually seem to be looking for and not many movies are made around these parts. But, that's the beauty of a being a zombie movie extra, you don't have to have a look. You'll be sitting in a chair having one applied.

Try to imagine the types of people that might answer an open call for movie extras. Once you know you don't have to have 'the look', it pretty much attracts everyone and their grandma. In this case, quite literally. They come for miles around for their chance at their 15 minutes of fame. I and the Mullet Family were no different.

I affectionately call them the Mullet Family, of course, it wasn't their real name. There were four of them. There was the little boy, about 7-8 years old. There was his older brother wearing overalls, maybe 11-12 years old. Seems like his name was River Sky, or something equally strange since they didn't look to have any Native American Indian in them. Then there was mama and grandma. Mama Mullet and both boys sported....you guessed it.....mullets. Yes, the same hair arrangement (I hesitate to call a mullet a hairSTYLE) made famous by Billy Ray Cyrus in his Achy Breaky Heart days. Grandma was the only 'normal' looking one in the bunch really.

Now, that alone is funny enough in my book. A mom and two kids with identical mullets showing up with aspirations to be zombies. It does make me wonder where the men-folk were though. Did dad have one too, or did dad run off when the other three came home from ProCuts sporting mullets? Wait, I never really considered this, maybe dad IS Billy Ray? it would have have been funny if it had actually been the Cyrus family.....then, had their been a young girl in the bunch that would have meant I'd be calling her Miley Mullet. Has a ring to it doesn't it?

Ok, sorry....back to the movie.

Try to imagine makeup experts carefully applying makeup and liquid latex to make this family zombified. The little one was quite cute, but did I mention that he ate live June bugs between takes? I'm telling you, they were downright strange. I do have some personal photos of the youngest Mullet, but since I'm unable to find the Mullet Family in the phonebook to get their authorization to poke a little good-natured fun at them, you'll just have to imagine.

The mullet-less Grandma actually did quite well and I believe they went on to utilize her in several key roles in the film. Go Granny Mullet (without yo' mullet)!

I've been anxiously awaiting the DVD release or widespread theatrical release of the movie for several years now. These things take time you know. The film has actually done phenomenally well at film festivals around the country winning several prestigious awards.

The name of the movie is Risen: The Movie and you can find out more about them at their website. I've provided the link below. Now, assuming we didn't all end up on the editing/cutting room floor, you may be able to spot the Mullet Zombie Family yourself. You can't miss them, I promise.

(I bet you'll be singing Achy Breaky Heart for days now! Ha! Ha!)

Are you in the trailer by chance? This is pretty funny, wish I could have seen the trailer but the link says this video is no longer available. If you find another link let me know, I really do want to see it.

Ahhh.....I MAY be in the trailer....but it would be in the scene through the fence where there are a lot of people. I was there for the filming that night. The video worked yesterday, but YouTube shows the embedding has been removed by request. Hopefully, the link I've put on here now works. Thanks for stopping by!

The movie is playing in select theaters, but not in Texas just yet. We're all really anxious to see it! We'll have to have a big fake "Grammy Night" party with a red carpet and all when it finally makes it to DVD.

I was a DJ on a Country/Western station in college. This was during the Billy Ray craze. I will be honest and tell you that I, too, swooned at the sight of him and his mullet. I can still do the dance, although it was much more pleasing to the eye at the tender age of 22 and a miniscule size of 3. You WOULD NOT want to see me do it today. With or without my roller skates. :-))

I'm not a zombie fan, but I'm going to check this one out. Let me know if it ever comes out on DVD, would you??????????

PM, Billy Ray is something else. Achy Breaky Heart can sure get stuck in your head though.

I've seen the DVD cover so I know they plan to release it, and I have the director's email. I last had email contact with him about 2 months ago. I'm very anxious to see it. I have a link to the trailer up further on this page. Be sure to watch it.

Good for you! There are all kinds of things folk should do at least once in their lives, and being a movie extra would be fun.

It was a total blast, Teresa! I agree that everyone should do it at least once! No money, no recognition, but a lifetime of fond memories worth so much more than they could have paid me.

I did it when I was five-- but actually got paid,  $16 plus cookies.

Will we recognize you?

KCC, You never cease to amaze me! This is hysterical. Miley Mullet, indeed!

I guess if you're gonna be in a movie being a zombie extra would be the most fun! I'll keep an eye out for the film -- on Netflix:-). MM

Rochelle! That is awesome! Have you written about the experience? If not, you should! Will you recognize me? Well, if you're looking for a clapping monkey, probably not. LOL I won't know until Jun 27th how much of me ended up in the final movie. I participated in at least 4-5 different shots, wearing at least 3 different outfits. So, we'll have to see.

MM: How are you? I read somewhere that they plan to release the DVD around Halloween. That's such a good time to release horror movies!

Yes, I wrote about my brief show business career a week or so ago, I think.

So were you the same person or zombie in all scenes? Any speaking or zombie noises?

I've got to catch up on my reading Rochelle...I'll head over to your hubs and check that out!

In one scene I was a civilian that was fleeing a building. In another scene I was a civilian on a different day hanging out with other people in a quarrantined zone. I was a dead person in a sea of carnage and I was a dead person in a specific closeup scene. I was a zombie in a mob scene where we are all very hungry and making lots of noise. I'm least likely to be spotted in this scene just because of how many people there were and how tightly packed we were.

Cool stuff! I'm all about zombies, I find their characters really interesting to see the dynamics of the un-zombified who are dealing with this issue and often meet their un-dead ends at the hands of immoral acts.

I'll have to check out Risen! I can reccomend two I've really liked recently: Zombie Honeymoon (no, its not as corny as it sounds!) and George A. Romero's Diary of the Dead.

Thanks lxxy for stopping by! It should be out on DVD soon (Halloweenish is rumored). I'll have to check out your suggestions.
