Las Vegas Graffiti in the Art District
72On a recent trip to Las Vegas, my daughter and I spent a few hours just riding around. We had the rental car gassed up and we wanted to see something other than The Strip. We found ourselves in the downtown area.
Both my daughter and I are fond of architecture and art and hoped to stumble upon some great artwork and impressive buildings. We very easily found both. More about the buildings in another hub, but within a few short blocks we found all of the examples of graffiti style artwork that you see here. These are only a portion of the photos I took.
If you have Google Earth downloaded, you can find the "Welcome to Las Vegas" mural on the wall at the corner of 1st and Coolidge by looking at the street view. The mural of the lady in purple and gray tones is on the Coolidge side of that block, but that entire wall is painted differently on Google Earth. Based on the construction found on Google Earth, the images there are over a year old.
The three you see below that are entirely black, red, white and gray with red lightning strikes are all on the same wall between two buildings. It's quite impressive seen together. However, I was unable to get it all in one shot because of how close the buildings were.
The Arts District or 18b
The Arts District is made up of an area of downtown Las Vegas that is bordered by Commerce Street, Hoover Avenue, Fourth Street and Las Vegas Boulevard (at Charleston) and Colorado Avenue. It is referred to as "18b" which stands for the 18 blocks that originally made up the arts district. This area continues to grow in size and popularity.
This district holds a "First Friday" festival on the first Friday of each month that draws large crowds into the area that are eager to eat, drink and explore. Entertainment includes various food vendors, music, visual performances and artists displaying their works.

When most people think of Las Vegas, they probably think of flashy casinos, elaborate shows, and The Strip. I'm here to tell you that there is so much more to do in Vegas. When researching online for local... - 18b Arts District (Official City of Las Vegas Web Site)

It seems that even Las Vegas has its "graffiti" artists. San Francisco and other cities in the Bay Area support "Street Art" - decent graffiti - as a positive expression of the arts in the community.
It's always good to see other communities exerting the same kind of "push".
Thanks for sharing this.
Tagging just to tag is certainly a "crime", ie destruction of property, but done for arts sake these artists just need a formal outlet to create and inspire viewers. Las Vegas street and graffiti artists always have an outlet for their art at our website. Submit your work today!

I think this is awesome! I just wish that people wouldn't do it as vandalism, but do something useful, and paint it on a canvas! Great hub - Thumbs up and useful
