Cool Things on Google Earth
92I admit it. I'm hooked.
I'm hooked on virtual traveling with Google Earth. This week's Hub Mob Topic gave me just the opportunity to share my hobby with you again by giving you more cool things to see or experience for yourself on Google Earth.
I could spend hours picking out places to visit and zooming in to see all the intricacies of each city. My first hub about Google Earthhas been very popular here at HubPages. Another hub about Crop Circles seen on Google Earth is popular as well. I have since written at least a half dozen Google Earth hubs that you can find in the links below. If you like this one, you'll love them as well.
I was first introduced to Google Earth by my husband while he was still living in England before we were married. We would talk on Skype and each look up the same location on Google Earth. It was like we were experiencing and visiting the same place at the same time even though we were miles apart. It was a magical experience visiting the pyramids and Niagara Falls together.
Now, I sit and look up places I've never seen, zoom in, and wander around. It is such a great way to visit places without leaving the comfort of your chair. It's easy to download and is very user-friendly. You simply type in the location you want to see and the globe spins and zooms right to the location you've chosen. You can then easily maneuver around zooming in further. There are 3d options and millions of photographs to click on.
Just a Few of the Places You Must See
- The Grand Canyon
- Hoover Dam
- Taj Mahal
- Niagara Falls
- The Pyramids - Egypt
- Great Wall of China
- Hillside white horse in England
- Victoria Falls - Zimbabwe
- Yosemite National Park
- Hawaiian Islands
- The island where the Tom Hanks movie Castaway was filmed.
- Eiffel Tower
- Empire State Building
- Statue of Liberty
- Click here for a link to Bill Gates house on Google Earth. It's hard to tell much, but it doesn't appear to be what I'd expect him to have.
"Places" and "Ships"-Online Games Utilizing Google Earth
PlanetInAction.com has developed a couple games that utilize Google Earth.
"Places" is a next generation 3D postcard that you create and send to friends. It has other applications as well. Click on the link above to learn more about this new cool tool.
"Ships"is a free simulation game which leverages the browser-based Google Earth plugin as the primary graphics engine. This game lets you steer the ship's helm ships of all types such as cargo and containers ships, barges and even cruise ships like the Queen Mary 2 (QM2). The game is in 3D and the entire planet is your playground. There are sound effects, physical modeling, and realistic visual effects.
Other Uses for Google Earth Besides Traveling
Although my hobby is virtual traveling on Google Earth, you can utilize it for other things such as:
- Getting a feel for the layout of somewhere you have to go for a job interview
- Locating houses or apartments that you'd like to rent
- Determining areas you'd like to work or live
- Visiting places you used to live (old girlfriends/boyfriends' houses)
- Seeing how things have changed since you left your hometown
- See the proximity of lakes, rivers, etc. to where you want to live
- Locate boat ramps to your favorite lakes, rivers, etc.
- Locate beaches and pools
- Determine best routes to tricky locations such as ballgames, large stadium venues.
- Learn more about world geography
- Locate towns you're not familiar with
- Use it as a study aid for history lessons

I am going to Google Earth now, this is so cool. Great Great
dori
haha now I can come to America!!
The street view is amazing too. Lots of people inadvertently got "snapped" for posterity! One English village drove the camera cars out!
Wow! Thanks KCC for all the info. I am definitely going to Google Earth. Can hardly wait!
KCC - You would have to see what they wear when they swim to appreciate the view!
KCC, I LOVE google earth! Especially for checking out directions - much better than just mapquest for figuring out where I need to go. I'll be back to finish watching these videos--I don't get to play as much as I'd like since I can't install google earth on my work computer :-)
Wow this is fantastic. I'm going to check this out. Thanks KCC!:)
Google are taking over the world aren't they?. It is not always up to date though. Our road still showed our temporary homes, caravans, six months after they had gone. I do love the Grand Canyon etc side of it. Great hub.
Cool, I need to try it :)
Great hub - and it is indeed an amazing bit of kit.
Excuse me while I download Google Earth. Thanks for a great hub!
Wow, that was great. I clicked on the list of amusement parts and the photograph of Sea World showed Shamu in mid jump over the water!
I must say some of the images were very insightful. I was skeptical of this but now I'd have to say you've got me interested!
Interesting read. I have to admit that I am a late adoptor of google earth (which is a shame because I am a trained geographer). But it is definitely a very potent tool. I am sure there will be a lot of innovations/new tools around google earth in the years to come.
I use integrated Google Maps, the free version of Earth, in my website. I wanted to bring alive the idea of the country of origin of consumer goods.
What's interesting to me is that we can use this technology free for our own purposes. Imagine having to buy in this capability even ten years ago. You'd have needed a lot of investment!
good hub, i have enjoyed google earth as well, it is very addictive
Google Earth is a fun hobby. I use it all the time to plan out my next camping or climbing trip.
Thank you so much for sharing this...I've been sitting too long just looking at the youtube videos you posted, I have to try this for myself.
This is our bar in Villajoyosa Spain there is a photo to click on thought you might like to drop in for a drink if you are passing
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?t=h&hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll
the photo was taken in the winter
I had to go to google map so I could get the co-ordinates but then when I just followed this link I couldn't find the photo I found it when I was just looking at the sat picture the bar (photo named the same) by the way is La Tasca
I've made use of Google Earth and Google maps to do research for projects I've been writing. Say a part of my story is set in Antwerp, Honolulu, or Bangkok. Having neither the time nor money to actually go there as of yet, I still have a way to at least see what these cities look like so I can write about them convincingly and even provide visual reference for my artist.
Great Hub. I always forget about this web-application when I am planning lessons. I will remember it and use it in future lectures. Thanks!
really love your videos, thanks.
Quite interesting! I never knew you could see things with so much detail with GE!
Thanks a lot!!! A very excellent TIP and a super Hub.
Wow! Fantastic Hub! I think I might get hooked on Google Earth as well. I wonder if it has any shots of Angkor Wat in Cambodia.
I'm gonna have to try Google Earth soon. Seems interesting.. thanks for sharing
Oh man, another thing to distract me from work! LOL, like I need another. Thanks KCC, great article!
GoogleEarth is the bomb! I first heard about it in high school and have since turned my family onto it. Great hub, btw, very informative!
GoogleEarth-ing is also feels so great because it's a way to travel across the globe without spending a penny in this crazy economy.
Great Hub. I have a friend going to Egypt and now I can follow her without a plane ticket or a boat ride.
google is so cool bc u can look up some stuff like.....pics,
games, mics for xbox360,and more cool stuff
Great Hub! I am a huge fan of Google Earth and many are the hours I have wasted on street view, driving down roads I've never heard of, seeing people I'll never meet...reading this has sparked my interest once again! *sigh* so long life, I'll be with Google Earth for a minute.
Great Hub, really!
Very interesting hub. Thanks.
This is quite the comprehensive "infocenter" on Google Earth! It is very informative and helpful. Thanks for all of your hard work ?
fine hub with different view of google earth.
I'm addicted to Google Earth as well. I use it to find out what areas I would like to visit depending on the topography and surrounding area. Its helpful having the b&b's listed and other lodging places listed on it as well.
Yeah, I love Google and everything made by Google.
Their tools are incredible!!!
nice video and hub
It's also one of my hobbies...
I've been using Google Earth Since Keyhole software made it's first free version. So many people don't even know about it. I use it when I want to plan a vacation. The flyovers are awesome.
KCC
What version of Google Earth are you using now?
The dates that the satellite shots are taken is different, mostly old. So I am not sure about the validity of the Bills Gates house peek.
There are features such as street views that are on the ground photos, from all across the country.
There is a flight simulation using the Google Earh base.
Is there more that I am missing?
BTW, what constitutes a high hub score such as yours?
Thanks
great hub--i love google earth--i put in my address and look and identify my car and other neighbours car park outside, quite amazing
"Virtual traveling" - that's a great phrase. And a lot less expensive than actually traveling to the hawaiian islands--I feel like I just went on a mini-vacation. Nice hobby!
You got me started. I have known about Google Earth for quite some time now but for some reason it seemed to be a lot of hassle. My question to you is how often will it refresh? Are the pictures static or can you tell if someone parks in a driveway or how many horses are in a pasture now and then in ten minutes?
When are they coming up with Google Mars?
Wow enjoyed your strange videos there. There are some strange things happening on this planet hahaha. Great stuff
Google Earth, Google Mars. Google is actually beating several imaginations. They're doing great. Thanks for sharing.
i have been aDdicted to google earth s
I amazing , dote , fascinated with google and your hub.
Hi KCC...that's lots of fun....and that's how life should be..:)...i can imagine now i step on US haha.....thanks for producing such a great hub!
Many an hour I've spent on Google Earth...
I'm glad you enjoyed it !
Wow, what a wonderfully informative hub!!! I use it to get directions and up til now that has been it...now that I know what all else I can do with it, I am going to have fun!!
Thank you for sharing and I am glad I found it!!!
Google Earth is way too much fun!! Great hub - thanks!!
Nice. I just went to Rome :)
Great hub, keep up the good work.
Google earth software is the best software to find any location in the whole world. previously these kind of info was only available with Goverment dept only.
I've looked at Google Earth before, but never really dived into it. I had been mostly satisfied with Google Maps and the roadside view, but Google Earth obviously has much more functionality. I am intrigued ^_^
Interesting Hub.......
Thank you!!
Thanks for sharing... I thought google earth was just google maps but now maybe I'll go download google earth and give it a try.
You are a number one.
I learned a lot of things.
thank you
Google Earth is amazing! I like to use it after a walk or a hike to plot how far I went.
Very interesting hub. Thanks.
Good stuff...thanks for the info
Really cool hub. I'm going to go check Google Earth out. Thanks.
Google Earth is really neat. I recently used it to find a store. That was to cool. Thanks for this Hub.
Google Earth is pretty cool but guess there alot more to it than I thought, so I'm going to go check it out. Thanks
Great idea! I will spend some time playing with it now. Thanks!!
I love that white horse on Google Earth! It's amazing. Thanks for this hub - I feel like I've been on holiday after visiting half of these places!
I actually only initially visited to see how to create and manages a successful hub, but I can understand now how one can get hooked on google earth. I never thought of it this way, quite exciting I must say.
Great info! I have actually done 'Google Earth Traveling' before. So much fun, and a lot cheaper then traveling!
Way more convenient too, yes you're right. Faster too, nothing like going to a city across the world in less then ten seconds! Good work KCC Big Country
As if you're becoming godlike, just controlling your computer's mouse and you can go anywhere in the world and seeing mysterious features of the Earth! Thanks for this great hub, KCC Big Country! I really enjoy goggling the Earth, too.
Hey, KCC, great hub and right up my alley!!! Thanks!
Fantastic hub showing that there's lots more to Google Earth than meets the eye, and certainly lots more than I ever knew about. Thanks for writing this.
cool i am also interested in computers and do enjoy google earth.... though most of the time im just trying to hack it (i do that a lot) i still enjoy it very much. the graphics are descent but the only thing i noticed (and you may have noticed) is that when you zoom into a building or the ground it flattens the entire surface showing a bad picture.... when better technology comes out i hope that google will make it so that when u zoom into ground level the buildings and the things around it come out of the ground into a 3-D affect.....
So good.
thank.
Haha you must have a lot of time on your hands. I'm not going to deny it though, google earth is addictive
Hi my friend. This is a great page. Please be a friend and visit my page as well. http://www.bukisa.com/articles/159014_a-killer-is-
Need to check this one out...great info!!!
Nice article!
Extremely fascinating. Great Work!!
Great Hub KCC, I am pretty new to Google Earth, but have just introduced my Step Father to it so that he could check out a town called Grenville in Grenada as research for a book he is writing. it is pretty amazing how it works I have to say.
Awesome list. Cheers. Some of the things you can see are hilarious
Great hub. Kudos.
I actually deleted google earth cuz it was taking up so much memory. But the picture of those elephants has made me reconsider. Yet if I start getting serious with it, I'm afraid I won't get any work done and I'll "starve."
I am amazed by the quality of the photos that google earth is providing now. It didn't use to be that clear. Great Hub
Google Earth is amazing - maybe we could read foreign newspapers.... Is this possible yet?
the street views are great
I never really knew just how good Google Earth was. The clarity is great.
Your hub is now part of my blog
Cheers
Dale
Great hub and nice videos. I never knew that Google Earth could be so good. Thanks.

Great article! I love google earth, it's perhaps one of the coolest things on the web today!
I love Google Earth, too! And Google Maps (for the super cool street view function AND its practicality, of course). It's amazing how technology has changed our world...
Animals and earth have always inspired me and gave me hope and peace when they smile.i dont know how earth is earth without animals. To me animals are as loyal as a person or even more like my best friend loxlee and momo.(my toodogs)

Im getting on google earth now to have a play! I wanna see some elephants now. Which african country is best to see elephants?
I love google earth. I used to do the same thing all the time, and with google street view. I'd visit all the places I wish I could be in person. Haha.
Thanks for the great links, like planetinaction.com.
Google Earth really is awesome; I love to fly over the Hawaiian Islands with all of it's varied geography.
It's really a great way to virtually travel the world.
This is really cool and great info :)
Going to the top of the Empire State building is number one on my list.
I like to spy on my neighbors from above.
In fact, I'm probably watching you right now. Muauhauahahaha!
Great hub.I like using google earth to visit places I havent been to.
outstanding service.
hey that's amazing just looks like we are 10 meters above the animals it's cool =D
I love Google Earth! Its very addicting. Thanks for the list of places to look at. The first time I found Google Earth I think I looked up the Grand Canyon too! Great Hub!
I agree, it's pretty addictive. You have to be really careful because you might end up sitting in front of your computer and watching these beautiful pictures. However I love doing it:D
This is great for having tour. Great hub!

LOL "click here to see Bill Gates' house" I can drive 15 minutes and see it in person.. it's huge but blends in well and the technology is over the top. At night if you go by on a boat you can see them swimming in their indoor pool!! Tee hee! This is such a fun hub!! Thanks KCC, I'm tired of look at Bill's house, can I look at yours?
