Favorite Vintage Commercials

Television commercials just aren't like they used to be. As a child growing up in the late 60s, early 70s, it seemed the commercials were more simplistic. I guess the times were as well, if you think about it.

I remember sitting on the floor after school watching episodes of "Bewitched", "I Love Lucy", "The Dick VanDyke Show", "Gilligan's Island", and others. Commercials have always been a part of the TV watching experience.

Sing Along, You Know You Know the Words

What Comes on Big Mac?

Oscar Mayer Bologna

Who can forget singing along to:

"My bologna has a first name, it's O-S-C-A-R, my bologna has a second name, it's M-A-Y-E-R. I love to eat it every day, and if you ask me why, I'll say.........cuz Oscar Mayer has a way with B-O-L-O-G-N-A".

McDonald's Big Mac

Or I'm sure you'll all remember how to make a Big Mac:

"Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, on a sesame seed bun"

I wonder how much money McDonald's could save if they only eliminated that middle bun on a Big Mac? Do you know any other establishment that sells hamburgers with a middle bun? You can't even buy them yourself to make at home. Do you think anyone would even notice if they removed it?

Farrah Fawcett & Joe Namath for Noxema

Joe Namath & Farrah Fawcett

Who can forget Joe Namath commercials? Here he is with Farrah Fawcett in a Noxema commercial.

It's a playful commercial. Wonder how many cans of Noxema it sold?

Krazy Straws

I loved these when they first came out. Kids today take them for granted.

Today's straws are also flimsy. The real ones were well-made and had lots of loops.

Krazy Straws were the type of "toy" that parents didn't mind buying when it wasn't your birthday or Christmas.

Milky, the Marvelous Milking Cow

Ok, I have to tell you, I've never seen this product, but I found it hilarious.

Creepy Crawlers

I always envied the kids that had these.

I still remember that they seemed to have a neat smell to them. They were dangerous to play with because they got hot.

They were a favorite amongst the boys in particular. They seemed to enjoy the gooey spiders and bugs they were able to create.

Big Wheel

Every kid with a concrete driveway loved these.

Those of us with gravel driveways hated them.

Do you have any idea how hard it is to ride one on gravel?

Near impossible to do.

Weebles Wobble But They Don't Fall Down

Who could forget the Weebles?

They were the little egg-shaped family that were oh-so-jiggly, but you just couldn't make them fall over.

I'm wondering what the milk tablets are.  Powdered milk, maybe?  Strange though.  She is very appropriately named, just an odd thing to give a kid.  Wonder how many kids drank straight from the teat?  You know some kid had to pick it up and try it!  GT would!

Gypsy Willow, Patty Inglish, & Alekhouse, thanks for stopping by and leaving comments. Hope you all enjoyed them! It's nice to think back to a simpler time every now and then.

Adverts weren't part of my childhood - my mother objected to them in principle, and so discouraged us from watching ITV. We watched BBC instead, and no ads there (-:

I'm sorry LG......you missed out!  I wonder how different we, as American children, would have been had we not been subjected to hours and hours of commercials (adverts, as you call them)?

Hi KCC, this hub is a lot of fun. Nostalgic indeed and I had never heard of that milky the cow before either.

Thanks Jouney, I'm glad you enjoyed it! It was fun going through them. I found one for the Inchworm too, but I didn't include it. It's the one that you sat on him and he bounced up and down as he moved along. It had a cute jingle with it.

Being a Brit I only recognise Weebles wobble but they don't fall down. My kids had quite a few Weebles and were always singing that. lol

Yeah, my British husband recognized the Weebles one right away also! I know you're dying to get Milky! (that sounds kinda bad...LOL)

I always loved that cute kid in the Oscar Myer ads. They sure went for cute back then, in fact made everything cute, even things that were not cute. I remember my father had a fit when he saw the commercial for a dog medication featuring Ronny Roundworm - he felt they'd gone too far (nothing cute about intestinal parasites).

LOL...that's too funny Dolores! I think I'm with your dad on that one. I found some more cute commercials last night...I may have to make a part 2 or add them to this one.

I loved it!! I love that Joe Namath commercial, and Big Wheels and Creepy Crawlers! Remember when toys were made of wood, not plastic. Make the part 2! :D

That's the same reaction I got from my UK husband, Ethel.  He knows so much about American culture through the Simpsons.  He lovessss the Simpsons, particularly the earlier years.  He was so disappointed in the movie.  Which, funny enough, the Simpson's movie was his first drive-in movie experience.  We still have one that runs here in central Texas.
