This week's episode of MTV's America's Best Dance Crew aired just prior to the 2009 VMA Awards on MTV.

These are the same awards where Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift, Lady Ga-Ga's shocked everyone with her "Paparazzi" performance, we saw an incredible Michael Jackson tribute with special guest Janet Jackson and Beyonce' rocked everyone with her "Single Ladies" performance and then she very graciously gave up the microphone for Taylor Swift to conclude her earlier acceptance speech.

On this week's ABDC performance, we were down to just four crews. They are:

  • Afroborike
  • Rhythm City
  • We Are Heroes
  • Massive Monkees

Mario Lopez announced that We Are Heroes was safe for another week, while Rhythm City moved to the bottom two. He later announced that Afroborike was safe for another week, and Massive Monkees would be in performing against Rhythm City in the bottom two.

In honor of the night's VMA Awards this week's challenge was called the VMA Challenge. Each crew would have to perform one of the iconic performances of past VMA entertainers. This week started out with all four crews performing together in a tribute to Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal".

We Are Heroes-"Vogue" by Madonna

We Are Heroes' challenge was to perform to Madonna's 1990 VMA smash performance of "Vogue".

I think the ladies made a great wardrobe selection. I think they handled the use of fans well. They had some good moments where they performed well in unison and I think the simultaneously back-flips were executed well, although their landing was off. The portion of the where the video is paused below also shows you another spot where they were out of sync. I think the letters across their butts was a bit cheesy too considering the elegance of the costumes. It might have been different if they wore cheerleader or drill team outfits.

It was a good performance but not their all-time best.

Afroborike-"I'm a Slave 4 U" by Britney Spears

Afroborike's challenge was to perform to Britney Spears' 2001 VMA performance of "I'm A Slave 4 U". In Britney's performance she utilized a very large live yellow snake as a prop. It was nice to see Afroborike utilizing a real snake as well.

I think it was one of Afroborike's best performances. The men hung from chains at the beginning and I think they incorporated them well with some other moves. They didn't go over board with lifts this time. Overall, I think they did well. They seem to finally be getting into what is expected of them.

I still think the gals need a bit more clothing. Seriously, I don't think they take up half a yard of material between them.

Massive Monkees-"Tearin' Up My Heart" by NSYNC

Massive Monkees learned that their VMA challenge was to NSYNC's 1999 VMA award performance of "Tearin' Up My Heart".

I was very impressed with Massive Monkees performance. There were lots of shining moments, popping and locking and the headspin was the clincher. I liked that they incorporated the desks, which makes more sense if you watch NYSC's original video.

I didn't see how Rhythm City could top this.

Rhythm City-"Wall to Wall" by Chris Brown

Rhythm City learned that they would be performing to Christ Brown's 2007 VMA performance of "Wall to Wall".

Rhythm City incorporated the use of the same type of cylinders that light up similar to the tables Chris Brown used. I just think they over-did it on the hopping around on them. I've always felt this group was a bit distracting just because there are so many of them to watch. When they do things in unison it's perfection.

I loved their choice of wardrobe. The steely blues and tans were beautiful. I do find the guys shirts to be a bit distracting because of how big they wear them. It adds to that chaos when there are so many of them.
